Paris & Lille, Blocquel (Lille) for Delarue, (ca. 1820). 12mo. (11,5 x 7 cm). Original wrappers, uncut. With a woodcut rebus for frontispiece, woodcut dictionary of rebus-pictures on 38 pages, 65 woodcut rebus plates or picture puzzles on 57 pages, and some woodcut rebus-pictures in the added "rules of the game of rebus". (64) lvs.

Charming, extremely rare little book on the art of the rebus, starting with a pictorial dictionary of rebus-pictures arranged alphabetically according to the little words or part of words the pictures stand for, and listing all rebus-pictures used in the small 'fortune-telling rebuses' found in pieces of candy or sweets bought at fairs, etc. Here an example of such a rebus-paper is loosely inserted, showing a picture of a horse-rider with a rebus of two lines underneath; its size is 5 x 4 cm.
After the rebus dictionary, 65 large and the smaller rebus or picture puzzles are given for use of the owner of the book, with their solutions given at the end, including the solution to the rebus frontispiece. Few leaves with the rules of the "Game of Rebus" are added at the end.
The little book, which can easily be carried around in one's pocket, has the warning "garde" printed on front cover, advising the owner to keep the book secret from the other members of the family or party. On verso title is stated that the book was printed by Blocquel at Lille, and is also available with Castiaux at Lille and at all major bookstores in France and Belgium. These little books and certainly those little rebus-papers from sweets and fairs are extremely rare today.

Fine copy.
Not in Gumuchian nor elsewhere found recorded.
