One of the main works of Galen in an authoritative early sixteenth translation into Latin: the textbook of physicians for over a millennium
GALEN(US), Claudius.De morborum et symptomatum differentiis et causis libri sex. ![]() ![]() Lyon, Guillaume Rouillé, 1550. (Colophon: Excudebat Philibertus Rolletius). 16mo. Contemporary full calf with two triple blind stamped filets, git central ornament and corner pieces on both sides, decorated gilt spine. Woodcut printer's device on title, woodcut head-and end-pieces, woodcut initials. 296, (24) pp. Early edition of one of the most important works by Galen, his famous treatise on the aetiology and symptomatology of different diseases in six books, translated and edited by the Basel Humanist physician Wilhelm (Guillaume) Copp (1460-1532), and printed in Lyon by Guillaume Rouillé in 1550. The translator/editor Guillaume Copp, personal physician to Louis XII and François I, early realized the need for an authoritative Latin translation of the original Greek text. His new translation appeared in 1528 for the first time in print in Paris. Re-editions were published in 1537 in Cracou, in 1540 in Paris and in 1547 in Lyon. Claudius Galenus (AD 129 - ca. 200 or 216) of Pergamon was a prominent ancient Greek physician, whose theories dominated Western medical science for well over a millennium, 'Galenism' dominating medical science of the Middle Ages, including the sixteenth century. Galen's writings on anatomy became the mainstay of the medieval physician's university curriculum. Also the Arabs held Galen in highest regard. Hunayn ibn Ishaq's translation (ca. 830-870) of 129 of Galen's works into Arabic, in particular Galen's insistence on a rational systematic approach to medicine, set the template for Islamic medicine, which rapidly spread throughout the Arab Empire. Galen moved to Rome in 162. There he lectured, wrote extensively, and performed public demonstrations of his anatomical knowledge. He soon gained a reputation as an experienced physician, attracting to his practice a large number of clients. Among them was the consul Flavius Boethius, who introduced him to the imperial court, where he became a physician to Emperor Marcus Aurelius. In the non-Greek world Galen's influence was based on innumerable translations of his works. The real battle between the Galenists and the medical 'modernists' took place in the Renaissance. The introduction of printing caused a revival of the genuine 'Galenus' in the form of text editions and commentaries. Vesalius' most famous work, De humani corporis fabrica, was greatly influenced by Galenic writing and form. Good copy from the library of a family of physicians in northern France, the 'Allemans' in Sedan: entry on the verso of front cover and entry of 'Joannes Antoinius Allemand. Sedenenus', dated 1760 on last printed page.- (Contemporary ms. annotations and underlinings in ink in text; some marg. spotting and water staining; spine sl. worn).
