First edition of a translation into French of a work on painting and graphic arts in Italy throughout the ages by the Swiss painter and draughtsman Johann Rudolph Füssli (or Fuessli or Fuseli) (1709-1793). The first volume is dedicated to artists of the schools of Rome and Florence, the second volume to the schools of Lombard and Bologna. Johann Rudolph Füssli was a contributor and editor to the 'Allgemeines Künstler Lexicon', the important artist's dictionary with over ten thousand entries. His son Johann Heinrich (1744-1832) worked with him and also worked as a literator in the arts, and he was also professor in national history. In the present work he wrote the preface which is followed by notes of the translator J.A.S. de Beroldingen (1758-1816).
