The South German architect Joseph Furttenbach (1591-1667) is the author of a number of influential illustrated architectural treatises published in his native town of Ulm between 1628 and 1641. As a young man he had spent 10 years in northern Italy (Lombardy, Liguria, Tuscany), making occasional trips to central Italy or Rome. The present book is the fruit of this stay in and trips through Italy. Although presented in the form of a travel guide, with itineraries guiding the reader from town to town and information on the value of local currencies, Furttenbach's text and unusual selection of illustrations reflect what he himself found interesting - building, fortifications, civil engineering, shipbuilding, stage design - and his remarks on the buildings and other attractions of the city Genoa, where he must have lived for a period, are particularly thorough and well-informed. He was also much impressed by the principal buildings in Florence. Although the present book is of smaller format than his subsequent treatises, it is necessary to an understanding of his architectural writings as a whole, for it was during his travels round Italy that he saw the buildings on which his architectural style and theories were based.
Good copy with old ink ownership inscription of the Carmelite monastery in Vienna, on title leaf, with an accompanying illegible, early 19th-century, circular ownership stamp. On inside front cover a bookplate of previous owner, and notes in ink: 'C - 10 | P. I. 12.'.- (Slight abrasions at foot of title leaf, and a very small stain at bottom right-hand corner of last three text leaves).
