Rare first edition of the pictorial marine dictionary, explaining all parts of a sailing ship and each detail of its armament and rigging, described and depicted by Master Shipbuilder Diderik Hansteen Funch (1791-1856), famous Danish shipbuilder. He supervised the building of the greater part of the Danish  fleet at the time, and when he died in 1856 his obituary was published in the Tidsskrift for Sövaesen, the Danish Maritime Journal, published at Copenhagen. Funch's indefatigable  energy and untiring industry was praised, for he not only spent much time in carrying out his job as master at the shipyard of the Royal Danish Navy, but he also found the time to write several valuable text books on ships and shipbuilding. He not only executed all the drawings for his books, but also engraved the plates and even coloured all copies by his own hand. The obituary further states in translation: "In everything that this man did there was a rare precision and in his literary works also a clearness and distinctness of  expression proving how highly educated he really was". Among the  many ships Funch had built was also the corvette "Galathea" which under the command of Captain Steen Bille completed the first  Danish circumnavigation.
The first part of the present work fully  illustrates all ship's parts, timber work and framing, making all kinds of knots, its armament and rigging details,  describing and explaining them on accompanying text-leaves; part two presents a dictionary of all the terminology used for ship parts and details, as well as for the sailing itself, including the whole typical seamen's vocabulary.
Good copy, blind library stamp of 'Det Lergenborgske bibliothek' on title.- (Some foxing throughout).
