Extremely rare collection of 87 lithographed surgical plates
[FRORIEP, Ludwig-Friedrich & Robert FRORIEP?].Chirurgische lithographirte Tafeln. (I. Band) -II. Band. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Graz, Joh. Andreas Kienreich, [ca. 1825]-1827. 2 parts in 1 volume. 4to. Later gilt lettered half cloth. With two lithographed titles, 87 numbered plates lithographed by Joseph Franz Kaiser, and 1 unnumbered plate as frontispiece to part 2. 91 letterpress explanatory text lvs. (mostly 2 pages per plate, incl. 1 index leaf (2 p.) for both parts bound after the title of part 2). Extremely rare anonymously published surgical work. A third part was published in 1830, but we could only trace a few copies with this third volume in libraries in Italy and Austria and also just a few copies of the first and second volume in other libraries (no copies in NCC). Only 1 copy in JAP and no copies in ABPC. Not in the usual medical reference works. Nothing could be traced on the artist. The very detailed plates mostly follow earlier and contemporary examples and show amputations, luxations, ruptures hernias, broken bones (incl. plates depicting complicated splits), polyps, tumours, bladder stones, spina bifida, trepanations (incl. instruments) etc. To all probability this is an edition of a choice collection of the 87 most important engraved plates of the standard work, edited by Ludwig-Friedrich Froriep (1779-1847) and his son Robert Froriep (1804-1861), Chirurgische Kupfertafeln. Eine auserlesene Sammlung der nöthigsten Abbildungen von äusserlich sichtbaren Krankheitsformen, anatomischen Präparaten, so wie von Instrumenten und Bandagen [zunächst zur Ausstattung von S. Cooper's neuestem Handbuche der Chirurgie ... bestimmt], now lithographed by order of the Graz published Kinreich by Jos. Fr. Kaiser, the founder of the second Lithographische Anstalt in Austria in 1817 (Lesky 647). These Chirurgische Kupfertafeln were published between 1820 and 1847 in 96 Hefte with more than 450 plates by Ludwig-Friedrich and from 1833 on by his son Robert Froriep by the Gr. herzogl. Sachs. priv. Landes Industrie-Comptoir in Weimar. In 1826 35 Hefte with 232 plates were on the market. Ludwig Friedrich Froriep studied medicine in Jena. In 1801 he became 'Rivatdozent er an der Universität Jena'. 29. April 1801 he got married in Weimar with Charlotte Bertuch, the daughter of the publisher Friedrich Justin Bertuch. In 1804 he was appointed 'Professor für Geburtshilfe an die Universität Halle'. In 1816 he moved to Weimar to assist his father-in-law, director of the Landes-Industrie-Comptoirs. After the death of Bertuch in 1822 he succeeded him as director of the Comptoir publishing house. Ludwig Friedrich von Froriep has had close connections with Goethe. His son Robert Friedrich Froriep (1779-1847) received his doctorate in Bonn in 1828. He moved on to Jena, became, like his father before him, a 'Privatdozent' in 1831. Later the same year he became a Privatdocent in Berlin, where he was appointed professor extraordinary of surgical anatomy. From 1833 to 1846 Froriep was prosector and conservator of the pathological museum at the Charité hospital. In this position he was Rudolf Virchow's (1821-1902) mentor. Virchow succeeded Froriep as Prosector at the Charité in 1847. While prosector, Froriep augmented his income by working at a private clinic and teaching anatomic drawing at the Academy of Fine Arts. In 1836 he became Medicinalrat and member of the Medicinal Collegium of the province of Brandenburg. To Froriep the academy of art must have been something of a favourite place, as he himself had a great talent both as a graphic artist and painter. He made the original drawings for his own works, and also imported expensive foreign copperplates for reproduction in Germany. At the Charité, however, Froriep had at rocky relationship with Johannes Müller. When his father became ill, Froriep took the opportunity to leave his positions at the University of Berlin and the academy. He moved to Weimar in the spring of 1846 to succeed his father as director of the Weimarischer Landes-Industrie-Comptoir, where he was publisher of illustrated scientific and medical works. Although Froriep made no major discoveries in his two medical disciplines, descriptive and pathological anatomy, his work was of great importance for making foreign discoveries known to German scientists, and he did a great effort to popularize expensive foreign illustrated works, that without his efforts would have remained unknown to German physicians. Occasionaly slightly foxed; a few plates cut short; bookblock slightly loosening; outer corners of front cover bumped. Fair copy.
