The family Frisch on German birds
FRISCH, Johann Leonhard.Vorsstellung der Vögel in Deutschland und beiläufig auch einiger Fremden nach ihrer Eigenschaften beschrieben. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Berlin, Nicolaische Buchhandlung, 1817 [=1733-1763]. 12 parts in 1 volume. Folio. 19th-century half black morocco, spine ribbed and gilt in compartments, gilt title. With an engraved frontispiece (black and white), 255 beautifully engraved and very detailed plates of birds (20 x 31 cm), all magnificently coloured by a skilful contemporary hand. Some nice woodcut initials and head- and tailpieces. 108 ll. with descriptions and indexes, including 25 printed titles. Rare, beautiful and very complete work on birds in Germany, extended with some foreign species, with over 250 splendidly hand-coloured plates by Johann Leonhard Frisch (1666-1743) and other members of the Frisch family. Johann Leonhard Frisch started to publish the work in 1733, which was, after his death, completed by his sons Leopold Frisch, who prepared the text, and Ferdinand Helfreich, who together with Philip Jakob Frisch, engraved and coloured the plates. The last 30 plates were executed by his grandson Johann Christoph Frisch. Our copy is of the third and last issue of 1817. There are no differences between the 3 issues (the second appeared in 1764), which explains the fact that some of the titles in our copy are dated 1743 or 1763, whereas other titles are not dated (see Anker) or are dated 1817. Our copy contains an extra index with a very extensive listing of all the species, because it was intended to be part of a larger work on birds and mammals, based on Linnaeus's system of nature: the reason why this third issue is considered to be the most complete. The work includes an engraved frontispiece (black and white) with the portraits of Johann Leonhard and Ferdinand Helfreich Frisch being depicted by a cherub. Furthermore, all the plates, 255 (and not like Nissen says 256), are very detailed and beautifully coloured. They are very well-preserved and striking for their brightness of colouring. The work is divided in 12 parts, which describe birds, based on a division in 12 bird-classes: (1) Finches, buntings and sparrows, siskins and other small birds with broad beaks; (2) Varieties of tits, of larks and of swallows, the red-marked hummingbirds and worm-eaters, and other hummingbirds (like the wren) and other small birds with slim beaks; (3) Thrushes and blackbirds; (4) The woodpecker, varieties of the woodpecker, cuckoos and parrots; (5) 3 varieties of jays and 4 varieties of magpies (for example the ordinary magpie and the red-backed shrike); (6) Ravens, crows and jackdaws; (7) Eagles, hawks, vultures and sparrow hawks; (8) Owls, other night birds and bats; (9) Wild, foreign, tame and common varieties of poultry; (10) Wild, foreign, tame and common goitrous birds; (11) Geese, ducks and varieties of grebes; (12) Mostly water birds: cranes, storks, herons, water hens, other gallinuas, gulls and snipes. A supplement with additions to each of the 12 classes with for example the flamingo and the cormorant concludes the book. Of special interest is the fact that the bats are recorded as well, as they are not a species of birds. Binding repaired; some occasional browning. Good copy of a rare classic in German ornithology.
