The library catalogue of the Court of Law of Friesland
[FRIESLAND - LAW].Catalogi duo instructissimae bibliothecae quae est in suprema Frisiorum Curia. Quorum prior est alphabeticus, sine ulla materiarum distinctione alter per capita, secundum diversas materias dispositus est. ![]() Leeuwarden, Johannes Seydel, 1776. Folio. Contemporary blue sprinkled boards. Woodcut coat of arms of Friesland on title. (2), 271, (1 blank); 98 pp. Important catalogue of the library of the court of Friesland, the only Dutch court library still complete untill the present day, consisting mainly of books on law. It was compiled by councillors Simon Binkes and Johan van Idsinga as decreed by the court on 6 Mai 1774. The catalogue is divided in two parts: the first part is arranged by format and then listed alphabetically, the second part is arranged by subject. For the greatest part the books are on the subject of law, but also books on theology, geography, history and classical antiquity are present. A manuscript catalogue of this important collection appeared in 1634, mentioning around 450 works. The first printed catalogue appeared in 1668 when the collection had grown to 870 works, followed in 1733 by a second one listing 1031 works (Leeuwarden, H. Strik & T. van Dessel). The present catalogue of 1776 is the third printed catalogue of the collection which had grown to 1325 titles (679 folios, 443 quartos and 193 smaller formats). The Court of Friesland was founded by Albert van Saksen in 1499 and ceased to exist in 1811. Its legal library could only be used by members of the Court and only the 12 councillors and the Procurator-General were allowed to borrow the books. Lawyers and others could only consult the books under supervision of the clerk of the court who was also the librarian. The Hof van Friesland library at the end of the 18th- century was undoubtedly the largest and most scholarly library of all the Court libraries in the Netherlands. Since 1911 the still nearly complete collection is housed at the Provinsjale en Buma Library of Fryslân at Leeuwarden where the books are still arranged as in our 1776 catalogue. Very fine, large-paper copy.
