To the Himalaya Mountains
FRASER, James Baillie.Journal of a tour through part of the snowy range of the Himala mountains, and to the sources of the rivers Jumna and Ganges. ![]() London, Thomas Davison for Rodwell and Martin, 1820. Large 4to. Later half calf, spine blind-tooled with red morocco title-label lettered in gold, marbled edges. Large folding map (645 x 745 mm) of the Himalaya Mountains. XX, 548 pp. First edition of this account of a voyage to northern India, Nepal and Tibet by the Scottish-born James Baillie Fraser (1783-1856), who spent his early life in the West Indies and later in India. In 1815, following the war between Britain and Nepal (1814-16), he led an expedition to explore the Himalayas. He was accompanied by his brother William Fraser, a political agent to General Martindale's army. During his two months of travel in the region, Fraser's original intention to trace the source of the Sutlej river was frustrated because his brother was ordered to leave for another part of India. The expedition therefore headed for the sources of the Jumna and Ganges rivers. In doing so, the expedition was successful and Fraser became the first European to reach Gangotri. In the present work Fraser provides a history of the war with Nepal before describing in full his explorations in the border area of the between India and Tibet. The work contains the following sections: (1). Historical sketches of Nepal; (2). Journey from Delhi to Jytock; (3). Journey with the political agent for the army of General Martindale; (4-7). Journey with the political agent, continued; (8). Journey to Jumnotree; (9). Journey to Gangotree; p. 507-48 contain appendixes. The work was reprinted in 1983 under the title Himala Mountains, and in 2000 under the title Views in the Himala Mountains: with extracts from Journal of a tour through the Himala Mountains. Very good copy.- (Some foxing and insignificant waterstaining in the first lvs. incl. the map).
