De-luxe copy of Johannes Le Francq van Berkhey's laudatory poem on friendship, patriotism etc., here interleaved with added plates, a.o. from the classic on Dutch table manners: the Nederlands displegtigheden by K. van Alkemade & P. vander Schelling (Rotterdam, Philippus Losel, 1731-35). The 11 added plates from the Displegtigheden show drinking horns, cups and glasses for example in the form of Spinola all by F. van Bleyswyck. the three folding plates represent the drinking platter 'Hansje in den Kelder', the drinking horn of Admiral Piet Hein from the 'Kunstkammer'of H.A. Dibbets, and the silver cup of emperor Maximilian I, signed by 'P.B.d.'.
After an extensive preface follows the main poem on traditional Dutch friendship, also containing a history of the old Dutch customs at festive dinners and drinking parties, which was published on the occasion of the Leyden gunpowder disaster on 12 January in 1807, during which a boat with gunpowder exploded in the canal Rapenburg (pp. 1-70), with explanatory notes on the history of traditions and customs of friendship in the Netherlands on pp. 71-216). The author himself considered the present work as a sequel and addition to Van Alkemade & P. vander Schelling's Nederlands displegtigheden (cf. p. VII). On pp. 217-273 a laudatory and historical poem on Utrecht is to be found with a separate title-page on p. 217: 'Utrecht, de kroonstad der Bataafsche, Frankische en Nederrhijnsche koningen, vorsten en prelaten. Eeuwschets tot op dezen tijd, toegepast op Oud Hollands vriendschap. 1808'. The works conclude with the errata and the notes to the binder.

Joannes le Francq van Berkhey (1729-1812) was a physician, scientist, naturalist and lector (1773-95) at the  Leyden university, but also a man of letters and a politician. He was responsible for the drawings for the engravings of the drinking cups present in this work, which was also published with the title Oud Hollands vriendschap, tot Leydens troost (Leiden, Van Thoir, 1809).

This is Francq van Berkhey's original presentation copy to King Lodewijk Napoleon (Louis Napoleon, 1778-1846), the brother of the Emperor Napoleon who appointed him as King of Holland in 1806-10. During his short reign Lodewijk gained popularity amongst the Dutch people for his sympathy expressed during disasters, i.a. the famous Leiden gunpowder explosion in 1807, and the flood in Gelderland in January 1809.  King Louis Napoleon contributed to the rescue operations and visited the areas himself. Also Berkhey was affected by the disaster.  After the explosion he was trapped in his house at the Koegracht, near the Rapenburg, which had collapsed. He was then, together with many others, housed by King Lodewijk at his palace at The Hague, the Huis ten Bosch. The added manuscript dedication is dated 1808 and probably made during his stay at Huis ten Bosch.

Fine copy printed on de-luxe paper.
