Splendid ployglot Bodoni printing

FRANÇOIS DE NEUFCHATEAU, Nicolas Louis Comte.
Conseils d'un pere a son fils, imités des vers que Muret a écrits en Latin pour l'usage de son neveu.

Parma, Imprimé par Bodoni, 1801. Sm.8vo. Contemp. vellum with red title-label, red painted edges. (4), 46 pp.

Splendid Bodoni printing of a multi-language adaptation in verse of Muret's "L'Institution des Enfans" by Nicolas Louis Comte  François de Neufchateau (1752-1828), first published at Paris in 1797. Each page has a distich in Latin and quatrains in French, Italian and German, beautifully printed in fine small Italic, Roman and Gothic types. The words of advice, 46 in total, about how to lead a good Christian and social life were given by a father to his son in quatrains in French, Italian and German, and were adapted from the advice given in Latin distichs by Muret to his nephew. Marc Antoine Muret (1526-1585), was a famous French humanist teacher and Neo-Latin poet. Both quatrains and distichs were very literary popular genres in children's courtesy books. According to Gumuchian the free translation of Muret's verses was "excellente". The book could now be used to teach children various languages as well. It was often republished, but the present beautiful Bodoni edition was published in a very limited edition only.

Fine large-paper copy.- (Binding sl. stained, title-label sl. dam.).
Gumuchian 2617 (priced it for 1,250 French francs!); Cioranescu 29454 (ed. 1797); Bibl. Angelica, Coll. Bodoniana 274; Brooks, Ed. Bodoniane, 805.
