Second and most complete edition of this interesting description and history of Japan by Edouard Fraissinet. The work contains an elaborate description of the Japanese civilisation during the 19th century and contentrates upon it's relation with the Western countries and especially upon the trade with the Dutch. To this edition have been added 3 chapters and a map, dated 1864. The first volume contains 31 chapters on the history and mythology of Japan, the discovery of Japan by Western countries, the relationship between the Dutch and the Japanese (chapter 14-22 and 27-31) and the English and the Japanese (chapter 23-26). The second volume contains 28 chapters on the relation of Japan with France, Russia, China and Korea, on the religions of Japan (9 chapters with one dedicated to the Mission of Saint Francois Xavier) and on the customs, industry, agriculture of Japan. The last chapter is devoted to the American expedition to Japan.
