Paris, Émile-Paul frères, 1920. Royal 4to (33 x 26.5 cm). Black morocco presentation binding, gold-tooled, with marbled and gilt endpapers, and with the original publisher's wrappers (including spine), printed in green and black, bound in.  With an engraved garden scene on the front wrapper and more than 100 drawings and plans printed from line blocks, many full-page. [120] ll.

A French bibliophile and hortophile publication, with the author's numerous large plans and drawings of gardens that range from 300 to 5000 square metres. The drawings show perspective views of gardens, terraces, steps, fences, rosaries, fountains and benches. Some of the detailed plans which show the layout of gardens, are accompanied by profiles, mostly of famous gardens. A special chapter, "Quelques jardins sous le climat de l'oranger", is devoted to gardens in the warmer parts of France and Spain. An appendix on "Roses et plantes vivaces a fleurs", with two illustrations, includes lists of plants grown in the gardens, giving the Latin and common names, period of flowering, colour of the flowers, height and conditions required. Roses, more plentiful than all others combined, are listed separately with only their names and colours. The book is artistically designed, and uses large decorated initial letters. The year of publication appears only on the wrappers and binding.
Though not numbered, the present copy is printed on Royal Arches laid paper with most of the deckles intact (leaf size 32 x 25 cm), and is clearly one of the 45 copies "sur grand papier d'Arches." Forestier (1861-1930) presented it in 1924 to the "futur professeur" J.M. Duvernay, presumably the Jean-Marie Duvernay who published on flowers and gardens in the years 1929 to 1962.

With a signed and dated presentation inscription from the author on title. Binding good, with the front wrapper slightly dirty and with a small abrasion, and the morocco binding worn at the back hinge and the corners. Presentation copy,  in very good condition, of a lovely garden book, with numerous large drawings and plans.
