VIII, 162; VIII, 192; VIII, 181 (1 blank); VIII, 189, (1 blank); IV, 203, (1 blank) pp. First Dutch edition of the fables by Jean de La Fontaine with the beautiful series of copper-plates by Dutch artists based on the famous rich designs by Jean Baptiste Oudry (1686-1755). They were first used in a French edition published in parts at Leyden from 1761 to 1786. Later the plates were also used for a French edition published in The Netherlands, and for another Dutch edition published in 1805. The engraving of the plates was started in 1758 by the famous Dutch engraver and etcher Jan Punt (1711-1779), with an occasional plate added by the Leyden draughtsman and etcher Abraham Delfos (1731-1820). But from the third part onwards, in 1769, the engraving of the plates was taken over by Reinier Vinkeles (1741-1816), a pupil of Jan Punt and one of the most important book illustrators of the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century. Here the frontispiece is by Reinier Vinkeles, dated 1786, after a beautiful original design by Jacobus Buys (1724-1801), easily the most gifted book illustrator of the second half of the 18th century in The Netherlands. A second frontispiece after Oudry is also present. The portrait of La Fontaine is here extra added from the French edition. The present is a very beautiful and rare edition. Fine set.- (Bindings sl. rubbed; occasionally sl. foxed).
