Roman history in a very rare IJsselstein prize-binding

Contemp. vellum, spine gilt, with decorative gilt borders on sides with gilt flowers at the four corners and central gilt coat of arms of IJsselstein, with modern silk ties, red painted edges. With richly engraved allegorical frontispiece by F. Bleyswyk after H. van der Mey, folding engraved map of the ancient Roman Empire, and full-page engraved plate of a column decorated with rowing boats. (66), 960, (120), 52 pp. First edition of a scholarly text edition with extensive comments edited by Carolus Andreas Duker 1670-1752), Rector of the Latin School of The Hague and professor of history and rhetorics at the University of Utrecht, and who lived the last eighteen years of his life in IJsselstein and Vianen. His edition of Florus is generally considered excellent. The present copy served as a prize at the Latin School of IJsselstein. This school existed since 1585, but was closed in 1746 by lack of pupils. The school was reopened again in 1759, and on the first Prize-giving Day, eight out of seventeen pupils received a prize. Fine copy of a very rare IJsselstein prize-binding, with manuscript prize acknowledgement, the prize awarded to H.L. de Wolf Winterberg, dated 1786, and signed by J.F. Kranen and the Rector H. Oevering.
