Fenaem, large woodcut printer's device on 2 titles, titles printed in red and black, and 250 large engraved illustrations in text, 230 in Flavius Josephus, and 20 in the work by Egesippus. (12), 402, (24); (4), 86, (2) lvs. The works by Flavius Josephus (37-ca.100 after Christ), in the new Dutch translation by Lambert van den Bos, or Bosch, published together with the work on the Jewish Wars and the Destruction of Jerusalem by the Christian historian Egesippus, translated in Dutch by Simon de Vries. The works by Flavius Josepus consist of: The richly designed allegorical title is signed by the engraver Gerrit Gerritsz. van Fenaem (ca. 1639-after 1671), a pupil of Jacob Savery, but the beautiful and lifely illustrations in text were mainly the work of the master himself, Jacob Savery III (1617-1666), an Amsterdam engraver who worked at Dordrecht from 1662-1665. According to Thieme-Becker they were party copied after Matthäus Merian. The translator, Lambert van den Bos, or Bosch (1610-1698), was Rector of the Latin School in Dordrecht. He wrote and also translated from the Latin and Greek a large number of historical and educational books. The added history of the "Jewish Wars and Destruction of Jerusalem" by Egesippus, divided into five books, is illustrated with 20 large engravings by the same artist, Jacob Savery, who illustrated Flavius Josephus. The work was translated from the German by Simon de Vries (1624-1708), a school teacher and bookseller at Amsterdam, who supplied his pupils and the general public with a large number of translations and very popular historical and scientific compilations. Both works have an extensive index at the end. Good, but rather used copy of this richly illustrated edition.- (Binding rubbed, damage to corners and spine; sl. thumbed and a few marginal clean tears at the beginning).
Thieme-Becker 11, p. 381 (Fenaem), and 29, p. 505 (Savery).
