Large 8vo. Contemp. half calf with 2 contrasting morocco letterpieces. With engraved portrait of Flavius Josephus by J. Houbraken after H. Pothoven, and 26 full-page engraved plates by Th. Koning after J. Buijs. XLVIII, 545, (1 blank); XXI, (1), 646 pp. Popular Dutch abridged edition of the works of Flavius Josephus (ca. 37-100), famous Jewish historian. The works are translated from an English adaptation after the Greek, and illustrated with new, richly designed plates by Jacobus Buijs (1724-1801), one of the most important Dutch book illustrators of the period. The main part of the work is taken up by the ancient Jewish history, divided into twenty books, each book illustrated by one plate. This is followed by the story of the Jewish wars, divided into seven books, the first six books illustrated by one plate. Added at the end are the dispute with Appion in two books, the story of the martyrdom of the Machabeans, and the letter by the Jew Philo to the Roman emperor Caligula. The Van Gulik edition is the only edition incorporating the "Life of Flavius Josephus" in the preliminaries, with an engraved portrait of the author. On page 124, at the end of an extensive footnote on Flavius Josephus' testimony on Jesus, the translator praises the author as follows: "De echtheid van dit Getuigenis blyft daarom niet minder twyfelachtig en onwaarschynlyk; doch zulks vermindert in geenen deele de waarde van onzen Joodschen Historieschryver: wij durven zeggen dat hij van alle de Schrijvers, die ons van de Oudheid overgebleeven zyn, het Evangelium het grootste licht byzet, en dat men het zelve zoo volledig niet begrijpen kan, tenzy men Josephus geleezen heeft." Poortman lists a third volume published by J. van Gulik in 1784, a sequel to Flavius Jospehus' works dealing with the history of the Jews after the destruction of Jerusalem (70 AD) up to the year 1700. That part (not present here) was translated from the French. Reasonable copy.- (Both vols. (partly) waterstained; vol. 1 covers and spine loose; vol. 2 joints splitting).
