How the natural sciences can make Children better christians

FITE, Marie Elisabeth de la.
Zedelijke Samenspraaken, Toneelstukjes en Vertellingen voor Kinderen.

Utrecht, Amst., A.v. Paddenburg, W. Holtrop, 1780. Sm.8vo. Contemp. vellum, with the gilt coat-of-arms of the city of Dordrecht on both sides. XII, 423, (1) pp.

Rare first Dutch edition, well produced, of an educational children's book, containing instructive stories and dialogues, but also including several plays, which children can perform themselves. Marie Elisabeth de la Fite (1737-1794) dedicated the book to the Queen of England, like herself a mother with small children to raise. In the preface the author explains that she is of more "enlightened" opinion than Mrs. Le Prince de Beaumont, although by no means of a non-religious nature. She believes, inspired by De Perponcher and Lavater, that early instruction in the natural sciences and history will educate children just as well, or maybe even better, to be true and devout Christians. She originally compiled the book for the education of her own children.

Fine copy in prize-binding but without the prize certificate.
Not in Waller, Muller, KLKL, etc.; not in NUC.
