An Austrian view on fortification
FISCHMEISTER, Johann. Contemporary half calf, spine gilt. 10 large engraved plates, all folding, and numerous illustrations. XII, 283 (1) pp. Interesting Austrian manual on the basics of fortification in the field. The book was a textbook for the Austrian artillery. In a short introduction Fischmeister states that this work is meant as a continuation and extension of another manual on field-fortification, written by F.S.M. Freiherrn von Unterberger in 1807. In our work a short introduction to several arts of fortification is given. Simple entrenchments and parapets, their construction and their applications are described as well as the installation of cannons on the entrenchments, the construction of several approach hindrances, like mantraps, palisades, wolftraps and other pitfalls, mines, chevaux de frise etc. In the last part different attacking and defence methods are described as well as several military bridges like the pontoon bridge and a bridge constructed of barrels. Good copy. (With some library stamps).
