Study of a 17th-century manuscript travel diary

FIERVILLE, Charles.
Voyage anonyme et inédit d'un Janséniste en Hollande et en Flandre en 1681. Etude historique d'après un manuscrit de la bibliothèque du Havre.

Paris, Champion, 1889. 8vo. Contemporary half dark green morocco, spine ribbed with gilt title and gilt coat-of-arms of the marquis des Roys. 76, (2, last blank) pp.

Interesting study of an anonymous journey to Holland and Flanders, made by a Jansenist, who wrote down his experiences in a manuscript on which this study is based. Fierville assumes the writer of the account is most certainly Charles Lemaitre, of whom not much is known. He departed from Paris on may 23rd of the year 1681 and returned on october 17th of the same year.
Most probably he made this journey partly because his position as a Jansenist was unsafe and partly because he wanted to gain sympathy for his cause. The study made by Fierville does not take the fact that the journey was made by a Jansenist as the main subject of it. It focuses more on the journey itself. The account is very divers and tells of the many villages he traveled through. Lemaitre's impressions of Amsterdam are limited, except for the fact that he notices the many canals and the numerous bridges across them. He is impressed by the splendour of the houses, which is somewhat abrogated by the smell and turbidness of the water. Furthermore Fierville describes the hosts of Lemaitre and the houses he stayed in, the differences in travelling, local habits, anecdotes which occurred on the journey etc.

Good copy from the library of the Marquis des Roys.- (Some foxing).
Not in Chadenat.
