Nineteenth century green morocco, two gilt lines along the edges of both sides, with gilt coat of arms of Gomez de la Cortina in the centre, spine rulked in gilt and title lettered in gold, inner dentelles, marbled endpapers. Title printed in red and black with printer's device of Pallas Athena standing next to a tree with a scroll reading 'Pacis opus'; some interesting wootcut head- and tailpieces Vol. 1: (12), 579 pp.; vol. 2: (8), 144 pp. Second enlarged edition of a collection of the most important works of the well-known Italian humanist and philologist Ottavio Ferrari (Milan 1607 - Padua 1682), containing his eulogies, letters and poetry: inscriptions, funeral poems and epitaphs. In 1634 Ferrari was called to Padua by the Venetian authorities to teach eloquence and Greek at the University and to improve the declining conditions of the University. In a few years time Ferrari succeeded in doing this and he restored the University in its former luster. According to the famous Dutch scholar Isaac Vossius Frerrarius was, next to Doni, almost the only Italian scholar with still a decent knowledge of antiquity. After the French title, title, the dedication to Johannes Landus, dated Padua 27.5.1668 and the indexes, folllow: - the 26 Prolusiones (p. 1-370; on various subjects, such as the cities Venice and Padua, including the University, the necessity to study, Tacitus, 'De Germaniae laudibus', Queen Christina of Sweden ('Cristina abdicans' and the added eulogy 'Pallas Suecica' for which poem he was endowed with a golden chain, sent to him with an accompanying letter by Isaac Vossius); three other eulogies are added for the first time in this second edition, making the total number 30). - the 98 letters (p. 371-468, to a.o. to Angelus Contarenus, the famous Venetian Senator Dominicus Molinus, Cardinal Barberini, Joh. Bapt. Doni, the librarian of the Vatican Leo Allatius and Pope Urbanus VIII). - the Formulae ad capienda doctoris insignia (p. 469-531). - Variarum inscriptionum atque Elogiorum liber unus (p. 533-579; the dedication is dated Padua, 7 December 1646). Vol. 2, with a separate title-page and with dedication to Frederico Borremaeo, dated Padua 1 August 1661: - Letters (p. 1-46, a.o. to Isaac Vossius, Cardinal Barberini, Fredericus Gronovius, Nicolaas Heinsius). - Epistolae nuncupatoriae aliorum nomine scriptae (p. 47-63). - Reliqua formularum ad petenda doctoris insignia (p. 65-93). - Epistolae (p. 94-107 ; a.o. to Joh. Ant. Zeno, Gaspas Scioppius, Rob. Malatesta). - Inscriptionum pars altera (p. 109-130; dated 1650-1658). - Epitaphia (p. 131-144). Very good copy with an interesting provenance: from the library of the famous Spanish bibliophile Gomez de la Cortona (1805-1868), whose gilt coat of arms is stamped on both sides of the binding, his printed ex-libris is pasted to the inner side of the front cover. Gomez de la Cortina was rector of the University of Madrid and owner ofr one of the most important private libraries in Spain in thje nineteenth century. Most of his ca, 120.000 books were bound by the best bookbinders of Paris and London.- (Some occasional soiling).
