Everything you want to know about 18th century Surinam
FERMIN, Philip. 8vo. Contemporary half calf, spine gilt with title label. Large folding engraved map of Surinam showing all plantations, accompanied by a list of their names and owners, first part, and 3 folding engraved plates, one large folding showing a Surinam tent-boat, and the other two showing the working of a mill by water and by horses in the second part. (4), XX, 228; (4), 323, (5) pp. First Dutch edition of an admirable clear and sound description of the Dutch colony Surinam. As can be judged from the title the work treats all aspects of the country and its inhabitants. The author was born at Maastricht in the Southern Netherlands and lived for years in Surinam. Although he does not condemn slavery in so many words, his observations are totally without prejudice and his descriptions of the customs among the negro-slaves are full of human understanding, if not admiration. According to Sabin it was "One of the best books, at the time it was written, in regard to the colonies". The work was first published in French in 1769 and a year later translated into Dutch, and in German in 1775. Nice copy.- (Small stamp on title).
Tiele 356; JCB 1735; Muller, America, 1465; Sabin 24119.
