With illustrations of a boys' and a girls' classroom and of children playing on engraved frontispiece, 2 engraved plates, one with various alphabets in Roman printing types and the other with various writing types in "round hand", and 8 woodcuts within ornamental borders to the reading exercises, which include some fables. (12), 152, (4) pp. Popular English primer. It not only teaches the A B, but also provides the children with a sound introduction into other school-subjects as well, like writing, English grammar, history and geography, including biblical history, while inbetween, a.o. in the reading exercises, the children are taught morals and civil behaviour. First published in 1756, the A B book is nicely illustrated, the woodcuts having been generally attributed to Bewick. Fenning's "Universal Spelling-Book" was also published at Rotterdam in the Netherlands, so it probably was also used to teach the English language to Dutch children.
