Engraved frontispiece with portrait of Louis XV by P.F. Giffart, engraved folding plate of an audience at the court of the Dey (Regent) of Algiers, engraved full-page plate of the 'rachat des captifs'. (8), 169, (1 blank); (10), LX, 306, (5) pp. First edition of an account of a voyage undertaken by three Trinitarian Fathers to Algiers and Tunis in 1720 with the mission to purchase freedom for Christian slaves from the Moors. The account is written, according to Barbier, by Jean-Baptiste de la Faye. The second part starts with half title 'La Tradition de l'Eglise, (pour le soulagement ou le rachat des captifs)'. followed by the 'Première liste des esclaves crêtiens, rachetez à Alger; avec le journal de leur route, etc'. and 'Seconde liste esclaves crêtiens, etc.': lists of more than 400 slaves ransomed (by the Royal Bounty of their late and present Majesties) from Mequeniz: also very exact draughts of that place, Algiers, Tunis, Alcasar, Oran and its neighbourhood, and accounts of their receipt in their native towns in France. The Trinitian Order: 'l'Ordre de la Sainte Trinite, dit Mathurine' was established by Jean Matha for the ransom and rescue of prisoners in the hands of the Moors. A second edition appeared in 1731. An English translation by Joseph Morgan was published in London in 1735 (second ed. 1736). Good copy.- (Ownership's entries 'Damblain' and 'Duboys de Riouw (?)' in ink on title; top of spine sl. dam.; some minor foxing; second part: pp. 11-12 with tear with minor text loss).
