A vivid picture of life in early Melbourne and on the goldfields
FAUCHERY, Antoine.Lettres d'un mineur en Australie, précédées d'une lettre de Théodore de Banville. ![]() Paris, Poulet-Malassis et de Broise, 1857. Small 8vo. Contemporary half blue morocco with gilt ornaments, spine gilt, original wrappers preserved. Title printed in red and black, with a small vignette. (6), III - XXIII, 278 pp. First edition of one of the best early Victorian goldfield accounts by Antoine Fauchery (1823-1861), with a preface by Théodore de Banville. Fauchery was not only a skilful writer, but also a celebrated early photographer, and befriended with the best-known French writers and artists of his time. When Fauchery arrived in Australia in 1852, he went to Ballarat, Victoria, where he worked for two years on the goldfields. After that he opened a store at the Jim Crow (Daylesford) diggings. Fauchery published this work after having returned to France. The letters of which the work consists, paint a vivid picture of life in early Melbourne and on the goldfields at the height of the gold rush in the 1850s, and include a description of the conditions upon the Ballarat diggings at the time of the Eureka Stockade Riots. A few years after the publication of this work, Fauchery went to China, where he died of an infection in 1861, aged 37. Nice copy.
