Very rare first edition in French of a finely produced fable book in beautiful original Swiss binding with very attractive engraved illustrations by Johann Rudolf Schellenberg (1740-1806). The book contains twenty fables selected from the work of famous authors like De la Fontaine, Hagedorn, Lichtwer and Gleim. Schellenberg, known as one of the best Swiss  engravers of his time, made the beautiful original designs for each fable. They had been used once before in the first German edition of 1777. They include fables on the classical animals figuring in fables, such as the fox (fable I: a fox finding a book (by Lichtwer)), wolf, lion, frog, monkey and dolphin, and man: Laurette, Frère Fritz, etc.

Good copy in fine contemporary Swiss binding with two engraved book-plates: (1) with the motto 'Non Leo sed Gallus', (2) of the book collector Dominique Goytino.
