How to teach girls to become good housewives
![]() ![]() ![]() Amsterdam, Johannes Wessing Willemsz., 1771. Contemp. marbled calf, spine ribbed and gilt. With fine engraved frontispiece by S. Fokke, illustrating the various activities of girls at home, from playing with a doll to embroidering, folding the linen and cooking. LII, 212, (2 publisher's cat.) pp. Rare first Dutch edition of Fénélon's famous treatise on the education of girls. The book was of course, published in the Netherlands in French as well, Brunet recording an Amsterdam edition already of 1697, also with the extra treatise by Le Chevalier de La Chétardie, and Muller records a French edition, published at Amsterdam in 1739. The Dutch edition seems however, to be most rare and is not found in the main Dutch collections of popular and children's books. Next to the short treatise on the education of a young princess by De La Chétardie, a lenghty preface is added by the Dutch translator, stressing a girl's duty in the home. Josua van Iperen (1726-1780), Minister at Lillo, at Veere, and the last years of his life Minister at Batavia, in the Dutch East-Indies, was one of the most learned men of his time as well as a gifted literary author and poet, being commissioned by the province of Zeeland to the Board preparing a new Dutch psalm translation. Van Iperen himself had thirteen children, but with his minister-salary he probably could not even afford his sons a good education, let alone his daughters. Good copy.- (Binding rubbed and sl. dam., the calf loosening at edges, but inside fine).
Not in Cat. Van Rijn, KLKL, Buijnsters, BNK, etc., or in Waller, Muller, etc.; cf. Heltzel, Courtesy Books in the Newberry Library, 574-575 (French & English ed.); Muller 894 (French ed.).
