Hauer, numerous woodcut borders, initials and mathematical figures in the text. (8), 92 pp. Rare original and only edition of the German abridged translation by Lucas Brunn of the main work by the Greek mathematician Euclid who lived c.300 BC. The Elements, in 15 books, is a comprehensive treatise on mathematics on subjects as plane geometry, proportion in general, the property of numbers, incommensurable magnitudes, and solid geometry. It is a textbook which gathers into one place he concepts and theories which constitute the foundation of Greek mathematics. As such it could develop into a book of historical value for mathematics in general. The Elements had an enormous effect on virtually all aspects of mathematics, but it registered its sharpest impact on the Western intellectual tradition as a model for thought. It offered a paradigm which over the centuries many have sought to employ in other areas. The book is dedicated to Johann Georg, Duke of Sachsen, Julich and Cleve, by the translator Lucas Brunn, dated Dresden 10.4.1625; the dedication is on pp. (3)-(5), followed by the preface on pp. (6)-(8). Lucas Brunn (Dresden, c.1572-1628) was a student of Joh. Praetorius at Altorf. In 1611 he was appointed professor at Wittenberg, but he soon moved to Nürnberg where he assisted the artist and engraver Joh. Hauer (who engraved the title border of this book) with the construction of his Camera obscura. He was inspector of the 'Kunstkammer' in Dresden and he has invented the 'Schraubenmicrometer'. In 1615 he published his influential Praxis perspectivae. Good copy.
