Franckfurt, Johann David Zunner, 1684. 2 parts in 1 vol. 4to. Contemporary vellum. With richly engraved allegorical frontispiece, and 41 large woodcut illustrations in text. (16), 210; 123, (5); 68 pp.

Ercker's book on mining and metallurgy ranks next to Agricola's as the best on the subject, both by its original contributions and by its beautiful illustrations. Lazarus Ercker was inspector-general of the mines of Hungary, Transylvania, and the Tirol, under three succeeding emperors in the 16th century. The technology he describes remained in practice for two centuries. His work became most popular as Ercker's emphasis was on the practical rather than the theoretical treatment of the subject.
First published at Prague in 1574, the work was twice enlarged and brought up to date, first in 1672 and the second time in 1736. Our copy belongs to the series of editions of the first enlarged version, to which also the Dictionary of metallurgical terms, and a survey of mining-laws were added. The English translation by Pettus under the title "Fleta Minor" of 1683 also was made after one of these first renewed editions, which prove to be most rare.

Good copy of a great work.
Ferguson I, pp. 242-45 (ed. 1574, 1672 and 1736); Honeyman 963-964 (ed. 1574 and 1736); Duveen pp. 194-95 (ed. 1598 and 1736).
