First and only Dutch translation of the "Apophthegmata" by the famous humanist Erasmus of Rotterdam, many of whose works were considerend to be of high educational value, and were used as schoolbooks for centuries. First published in Latin in 1531 in 6 books, later enlarged to the present 8 books, this collection of proverbs  and wise sayings was originally dedicated by Erasmus  to the young Prince of Cleve to further his education. The proverbs, mainly taken from classical antiquity, are brought into relation with their original author and the situation which gave rise to their phrasing, so the book also provides a virtually complete course in classical history, philosophy, and literature. In the Dutch schools the book must have been used mainly in Latin, and perhaps also in the French translation, as there is no other Dutch edition known.

Fine copy of a rare edition, with the bookplate of A.P. van Stolk.
Bibl. Belg. II, E 403; Vander Haeghen, p. 19; Muller 577; Erasmus Coll. Rotterdam p. 24; Scheepers I, 479; NUC lists 1 copy.
