Prize book from Gouda
ERASMUS, Desiderius.Colloquia cum notis, tertia parte auctioribus, & indice novo, accurante Corn. Screvelio. ![]() ![]() Leiden, Franciscus Hackius, 1655. 8vo. Contemporary vellum with overlapping flaps; spine lettered in ink; the name 'AE. VERRET' on the front cover and 'GOVDA' and '1658' on the back stamped in gilt; rests of ties; red stained edges. With engraved title: Erasmus discussing with three other scholars sitting around a table with a globe and an open book on it. (12), 677, (21) pp. Prize copy of the first edition of Erasmus' Colloquia with the extensive annotations by the great critic and philologist Cornelius Schrevelius (1608-1664) from Haarlem, printed in small type at the bottom of each page, further explaining the more difficult Latin expressions. The Colloquia are, of course, eminently suitable for use as an academic award; they were written by Erasmus as exercises for students to learn the Latin language in all its finesses, though they also function as a medium for the expression of Erasmus' deeply-helt convictions about the nature, ills and proper aims of society. First printed in 1518, they were widely used as a school text for centuries and remain a valuable source of information on various aspects of sixteenth century intellectual life. The copy was awarded to Aegidius Viret (or 'Verret' as stamped on the front cover) being the best pupil of his class in the year 1658 of the Latin School at Gouda. This is all written on the verso of the first fly-leaf facing the title: 'Optimae spei adolescenti Aegidio Viret cum e sexta in quintam classem principem locum strenue tutatus esset hoc litterarium praemium decreverunt', signed by his tutors A. Offenburen, D. Breuckel, T. van der Graeff and J. vander Wol, under the rectorship of Joh. Wourdanus. The manner of stamping the name, place and year in gold on the covers is in conformance with the manner described and illustrated in Spoelder, p. 567 (Gouda I). Good copy. - (Binding somewhat soiled and rubbed).
