Seventeenth century prize book & certificate from the Latin School at Leiden

Contemporary vellum with blind double ruling and corner pieces and a large gilt-stamped figure of Minerva, holding an escutcheon with the coat-of-arms of the city of Leyden, and underneath lettered "Lugd. Bata.", in centre on both covers. With richly designed frontispiece including the full-length portrait of Epictetus, and beautiful large folding allegorical plate, both etched by one of the most celebrated print makers of the late seventeenth century, Romeyn de Hooghe and dated '1670'. (24), 250, (2) pp. Scholarly edition, printed in Greek and Latin, parallel in two columns, of the works of the stoic philosopher Epictetus, active in the second half of the first century. It is the first edition containing the fine engraved frontispiece and the beautiful large allegorical etching by Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708), measuring ca. 34 x 20 cm. In a fine prize-binding of the Latin School at Leyden, with the engraved folding certificate for the prize winning pupil Adrianus Waker, pasted to the second fly-leaf, signed by J. vander Meer, B. Groenendijck, the famous Leiden professor of theology Abraham Heidanus (1597-1678) and Alb. Ruse, dated February 1676. Fine copy, with the bookplate of Fintray House Library.- (Ties lacking).
