First edition of a beautifully illustrated natural science text book on snowflakes in their numerous variations of ingenious forms and other atmospheric phenomena by Jan Engelman (1708-1752), physician and natural scientist. He tried to trace logical laws in nature and he found in them an extra proof of the beauty and perfectness of God's creation. The author added a religious moralistic conclusion to his purely sientific exposition. Next to students of natural sciences, the book also was much in demand by artists for its rich illustration offering them an incredible variety of natural ornaments.
According to Bierens de Haan the first edition was published under the title: 'Verhandeling over de sneeuwfiguren; en hoe deze natuurbeschouwing best aan te leggen' in 1743,  however this edition is not mentioned in STCN. A reissue of our first edition was published by G. van den Brink at Utrecht in 1771.
Bierens de Haan mentions 28 plates, our copy contains 29 plates. All the copies we have traced contain 28 plates.

Fine copy.- (Binding sl. rubbed).
