First edition, charmingly woodcut illustrated, with exemplary verses on things children should do, but more often on things children should not do, by the Dutch jurist, teacher and member of Parliament (1848-53) Adriaan Walraven Engelen (1804-1890). According to the title the poems were adapted after a popular English source. The book is meant for children from four till eight years. A nice woodcut of small children studying illustrates the good pupil, but most are less nice, showing a girl falling of a fence and breaking a leg, a boy burning himself with a hot poker, children eating poisonous berries and dying, etc. Another nice woodcut shows a girl playing with her doll-house.
