Amsterdam, C. Schaares, 1823. Sm.8vo. Orig. blue wrappers. With portrait of De Ruyter on engraved title, and 2 fine stipple-engraved plates by W. van Senus after J. Smies. (4), 268 pp.

Rare first edition of easily the most famous of the many biographies of Dutch national heroes for children, a biography of Michiel Adriaansz. de Ruyter (1607-1676). De Ruyter's most famous feat was the so-called "Voyage to Chatham" during the "Second English War" from 1665-1667. As usual at the time, the book was written in the form of a dialogue between a father and his children. And, as the author explains in his preface, it was mainly based on the famous biography of De Ruyter by Gerard Brandt from 1687. The name of the author is here shortened on title to Engelberts Gs. His biographies on Dutch sea heroes were also used in Japanese education.

Good, uncut copy.- (Old owner's note in blue pencil at top of title; title waterst.; library-stamps).
