Ouvrage indispensable a tous nos fashionables. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Paris, H. Balzac for the author, 1827. 12mo. Contemporary half brown pigskin, spine gilt, marbled endpapers, yellow painted edges. With 2 full-page lithographed portraits of the author, of which one coloured by hand, and 4 folding lithographed plates (A-D) comprising 32 figures. 122 pp. Rare first edition of this manual on how to put on a tie, by Émile-Marc Hilaire, better known as Marco de Saint-Hilaire (1796-1887). There were so many different ways of knotting a tie in the 1800's, that several books on the subject were published. The present treatise describes fourteen different cravats with eighteen variants. In the opinion of Saint-Hilaire, "The art of tying the cravat is to men of the world what the art of dining is to politicians". There were knots that were only to be worn by poets (cravate Byron), knots that men wore when looking for love (cravate a la bergami) and others that were more like neckerchiefs or scarves. The book was printed by Balzac, who in 1825, because his literary works were of little commercial success, went into the printing, publishing and typecasting business. Already in 1828, however, he had so many debts that he had to give up these attempts. His printing office had by that time nevertheless produced over 300 different documents. The present work proved to be very successful, as according to Quérard there appeared three other editions the same year. A year later an Italian translation was published. Whereas the reference works mention one portrait only, our copy contains a frontispiece portrait by Bernard after Henry Monnier, nicely coloured by hand, as well as a half-length portrait, bound in after p. 49. At the end a list of "fabricans, marchands et marchandes de cravates, de foulards et de cols les plus en vogue dans le capitale" is added. Good copy.
Colas 2618; Lipperheide II, 1697; Quérard I, 1236; Vicaire III, 573; not in BNF; OCLC lists one copy only.
