Amsterdam, J. van Gulik, [1785]. 24mo (9.3 x 5.3 cm). Charming contemporary embroidered binding of gold threads, on both covers forming also rococo carthouches for two emblematical watercolours: on the front cover Cupid with an empty quiver is standing on a landing stage and is crossing the border between life (blossoming flowers) and death (a dark landscape with dead trees), with the motto: "Je te vois icy perir il te faut comme moi mourir"; on the back a winged Cupid is sitting on the seashore holding an anchor, with the motto "Je ne m'attache qu'au solide"; decorated floral paper pastedowns. In a contemporary red morocco richly gilt pull-off case. Engraved title in rococo border and 12 numbered full-page engraved plates by Theodorus Koning (1748-1829). [50] ll. bound in one quire.

Rare Amsterdam almanac for the year 1786 published by J. van Gulik. The accent in this almanac is not on the calendar (f. 8-13) and annual information such as the dates of seasons, the expected eclipses, the official holidays, the times of departure of postal services and passenger coaches and barges, time-tables for the closing of the city-gates and tariff-lists of seals (f. 14-25), but on all kinds of short stories, poems and songs: 12 numbered short stories, each illustrated with a full-page engraved plate (f. 2-7 and - as all the leaves are bound in one quire - f. 44-49), and short stories, anecdotes, jokes, poems and songs (f. 26-43) and riddles (f. 50).
The rare, charming and beautiful embroidered binding with the two emblematical watercolours makes this almanac a very desirable miniature book.

Fine copy of this rare almanac.
