On Afghanistan
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Paris, Nepveu, 1817. 3 vols. 18mo. Original printed wrappers, richly engraved on all sides, preserved in a modern green morocco gilt box. With 14 full-page copper engraved plates depicting different costumes, all beautifully coloured by hand. XLIV, 189 (3) pp; (4), 222, (2) pp; (4), 223 (1) pp. Original French translation of one of the first exhaustive works on the kingdom of Kabul, now known as Afghanistan, written by a British official, Mountstuart Elphinstone (1779-1859). Elphinstone was sent to the kingdom of Kabul by the rulers of British India in 1808, to discuss with the Shah the possibilities of a mutual defense against Napoleonic France. Elphinstone, as a consequence, was the first Englishman to visit Peshawar, the traditional winter residence of the rulers of Kabul, which was also the terminus of all trade routes from east to west. The meeting was concluded by a treaty of friendship (June 7, 1809), the Shah promising to oppose the passage of foreign troops through his country. Before this could be ratified, however, the Shah was driven off the throne by his brother. In 1819 Elphinstone was assigned as governor of Bombay. In the introduction, a short history of Afghanistan is given, ending with de coming of the English in 1809. The actual work in fact is a record of the voyage Elphinstone and his mission made, starting with their leaving from Delhi in 1808. The work gives a good impression of Afghan society at the beginning of the nineteenth century, a time Afghanistan was still vitually unknown in Western Europe, and was first published in 1815 under the title: An account of the kingdom of Cabul and its dependencies in Persia, Tartary and India. A German translation appeared in the Neue Bibliothek der wichtigen Reisebeschreibungen. Beautiful copy.
