First and only edition of an account on the experiences of a planter, Robert Henry Elliot (1837-1914) in India, in the region of Mysore and Coorg. Elliot, who sailed for India in 1855, elaborately describes the planting  and cultivating of coffee and cardamom. In chapters 2 and 3 and 4 he writes about the customs and religions of the native inhabitants. In chapter 5 he explains the rituals of bribery, in chapter 6 about castes, chapter 7 about religion, chapter 8 about education. Chapter 9 deals with native agriculture. Chapter 10 is on coffeeplanting, chapter 11 in chinchona planting, chapter 12 on cardamom, 13 on tea, silk, sandalwood and cotton. The remaining chapters are on colonisation, native labourers and their mentality, and social an political issues in the region. Chapter 15 is on learning the regional language. The first frontispiece shows the bungalow Bartchinhulla of Elliot.
