![]() ![]() ![]() Leiden, (Paris), 1603. 8vo. Contemporary brown calf, spine gilt in compartments, with red morocco title lable, gilt inner dentelles, marbled endpapers. (16) 103, (1 blank); 165, (3 blank) pp. Rare book written during the Eighty Years' War about conspiracies against Prince Maurits of Nassau organised by noblemen and supported by Spain. The pamphlet consists of 4 parts, written by a nobleman of the army of Maurits; the first part, called Lettre mystique touchant le succes de la conspiration derniere (pp. 1-49), is a letter to Jean Boucher, probably the important French theologian (c. 1548-1644), who was active in the political scene and died in exile. This was due to the fact that he wrote pamphlets against the monarchy which were even more violent than this pamphlet. In this letter, dated 1.9.1602, Boucher is told about a conspiracy of some Spaniards and Jesuits. The letter is followed by the answer of Boucher (pp. 49-78), and the nobleman's reply on pp. 79-103. The fourth part, beginning with a new pagination (pp. 1-165), is called Cabale mysterielle revelee par songe, envoyee au P.I.Bouchet fuyant en Espagne. A similar, but not identical pamphlet, by the same author exists, composed of 144 leaves, and titled Lettre mistique touchant la conspiration dernière, avec l'ouverture de la caballe mystérielle des Jésuites revelée par un songe à un Gentilhomme des Troupes du Conte Maurice...The title joins both titles from this pamphlet, and was already printed in 1602, what could indicate that our book is an elaboration of the pamphlet of 1602. Good copy.- (One hinge weak).
Cf. Petit, L.D. Bibl. Nederl. pamfletten. 783 (similar title by the same author); only 3 other copies recorded in the NCC.
