With engraved portrait of Henry Obookiah by Dagget, Hinman & Co. for frontispiece. 124 pp. Rare popular Sunday-school book, containing the story of the exemplary life of a native of Hawaiï, Henri Obookiah, born about the year 1792 and the victim of civil wars in his country. When brought to America he was converted and studied at Andover, planning to return as a missionary to his mother-country. He suddenly died of typhoid fever in 1818. The first edition then was published in 1819, including four sermons and addresses, which were here left out. The author and minister Edwin Welles Dwight was first instructor of the "Foreign Mission School". He had "discovered" the young Hawaiïan at New Haven and took care of him. The story is based upon the informations given by Henry Obookiah himself. Good copy of a very rare chapbook, with old owner's ms. entry: "Ellworth Juthill" on first free endpaper.- (Binding sl. rubbed; some sl. foxing).
