Nice copy of the first French edition of an account of the 15-month commercial expedition to Senegal and Sierra-Leone, commanded by Jean-Baptiste-Léonard Durand (1742-1812). The voyage was initiated by the French African Company, "La Compagnie de la Gomme" and Durand set sail on march 13, 1785 and arrived a month later at the isle Saint-Louis from which point he continued his voyage over land. This work contains a very detailed account of everything he came across on, on his journey and of the things he accomplished and agreed on with the local authorities.
The illustrations in the atlas -volume contain, among others, 3 copies of commercial treaties stated in French and Arabic, many very detailed maps of the coast of Senegal and of the settlemets along the river Senegal and illustrations with scenes of daily life and domestic vegetation and animals. On his journey back Durand was shipwrecked which was the final hardship of his journey which was with many endurances. Durand dedicates this work to all merchants who undertook and would undertake the same kinds of commercial expeditions as he did, expressing compassion and admiration for their perseverance. This edition was similtaneously published with an 8vo-edition. In 1806 an English translation appeared.

Good copy.
