Paris, H. Agasse, An III de la République (1795). 4to. Contemp. half calf. With richly engraved allegorical frontispiece, zodiac signs, ancient and archaeological artefacts suchs as vases and coins on 22 folding engraved plates. 16 pp. text.

First edition of a plate atlas illustrating, with full explanations, the famous theory that the signs of the zodiac represent the origin of cults, by the French philosopher and scientist Charles François Dupuis (1742-1809), belonging to the author's main work, "L'Origine des Cultes", published in 1795. The work, dedicated to the Assemblée, was finished during the Convention Nationale. In it, the author takes full advantage of the revolutionary times to think and writes what he knew would go against the general public opinion.
Already in 1779-1780 the work was announced in the "Journal des Savants", after which Frederik the Great wanted it to be published at Prussia, offering the author a chair at the University of Berlin and a place at the Berlin Academy.  Both were accepted by Dupuis but the death of the Prussian King ended the Prussian plans. Next to the present plates-atlas also a globe illustrating Dupuis' theory was to be had, an advertisement for which is printed on verso title. Although the author had been the protegé of the Duc de la Rochefoucauld, he was singled out for various political duties during the French Revolution, being elected a member of the Convention Nationale, the Council of the "Cinq-Cents", and also of the Directoire Exécutif.
