One of several volumes of letters written by Mrs. Anne-Marguerite du Noyer, born Petit, who after an unhappy marriage travelled with her two daughters all over Europe. Voltaire, when visiting the Netherlands, fell in love with one of her young girls. These letters, full of contemporary news and gossip, became very famous. The present volume stands on its own, describing the city of Utrecht, and gossiping about the courtly adventures of Dutch politicians and of the numerous foreign delegates to the Peace Congress then held at Utrecht. It was published under the much used fictitious address of Pierre Marteau at Cologne.

Good copy.- (Some sl. browning; bookplate on upper pastedown; a few old owner's entries).
Gay Lemonnyer II, 840-842.
