(2), V-LXI, (1 blank), (16), 132; (2), II, 336; (6), 358 pp. Famous and impressive work on the history of the battles of Prince Eugene de Savoye (1663-1736), the duke of Marlborough (1650-1722), and the Prince of Orange and Nassau, Johan Willem Friso (1687-1711), written by Jean Dumont, baron of Carlscroon (1660-1726), and enlarged by Jean Rousset de Missy (1686-1762). Dumont's work was first published in 1725 with the title Batailles gagneés par le serenissime prince Fr. Eugene de Savoye sur les ennemis de la foi, et sur ceux de l'empereur & de l'empire, en Hongrie, en Italie, en Allemagne & aux Pais-Bas. This title-page, dated 1720, and with Pierre Husson named as the printer, can be found in the first volume. All of the three main characters fought in the War of the Spanish Succession, and the first also went on campaigns against the Turks. The work is beautifully illustrated with many maps and views of the battles and the regions where they were fought. The Netherlands, Southern Germany, Italy and the Balkan are depicted on these plates. The work is very much sought after because of the rare and beautiful views by Jan Huchtenburgh (1647-1733), a Dutch painter and engraver who served Prince Eugene de Savoye in 1708 and 1709, and kept in touch with him after these years. Also the large folding view of the bombardment of the town of Geldern (Dutch-German border area), engraved on three leaves, is very rare. Added: Autograph letter by Prince Eugene de Savoye. In French. Fine set.
Cohen-Ricci 337 (mentions 102 plates); Lewine, p. 163; Muller, Historieplaten, 3032; Thieme-Becker XVIII, p. 29.
