DUISDEIKER, Josua Hendrik.Levensschetsen van vermaarde mannen uit verschillende tijdvakken. Op rijm gebragt voor de jeugd.     Amst., H.H. Huisman, (ca. 1840). Sm.8vo. Orig. boards. With 12 lithographed portraits, all coloured by hand. 24 pp. Popular print-series of portraits of famous men in arts and science, accompanied by explanatory verse. As the author explains in his preface, the publisher had the prints already in stock, after which the author, Josua Hendrik Duisdeiker (1814-1881) was asked for a suitable text to explain them to children. The author then chose the rhymed form. The portraits show Vondel, Rochefoucauld, David Teniers, Wouwermans, Christiaan Huygens, Lulli, the French engraver Edeling, the botanist Tournefort, Boerhave, Le Sage, the philosopher Caylus, and the French poet Cresset. The portaits are made in a popular style, rather primitively drawn, and were coloured rather casually 'by thumb'. They were decorated with green laurel twigs underneath, several touched with red. Good copy of a rare portrait-series.- (Spine loose; sl. waterst. at the top).
