First edition of this victorious account by general Guillaume Henri Dufour on his victory in the Sonderbund War of 1847. He led the army and defeated the Sonderbund consisting of the seven Romanist cantons Lucerne, Fribourg, Valais, Uri, Schwyz, Unterwalden and Zug in a campaign that lasted only from November 3  to November 29, and claimed fewer than a hundred victims. The cantons agreed to accept national rule in religious matters.
Guillaume-Henri Dufour (Konstanz, September 15, 1787 - Geneva, July 14, 1875) was a Swiss general, bridge engineer and topographer. He served under Napoleon I. He presided over the First Geneva Convention which established the International Red Cross. He was the president of the Swiss Federal Office of Topography from 1838 to 1865. The Dufourspitze (the highest mountain in Switzerland) of Monte Rosa massif is named for him.
Other works by Dufour are Mémoires sur l'artillerie des anciens et sur celle du moyen age (1840), Manuel de tactique pour les officiers de toutes armes (1842) and De la révolution permanente (1850).
