Utrecht, widow Coenraet Henricx, 1586. Small 4to. Without binding. Woodcut vignettes on title-page, one woodcut initial. (4) pp.

Proclamation by Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, promulgated 5 July 1586, to the rural population in areas dominated by the Spanish troops to move from their houses to safer territories, in order to deprive the Spanish enemy from provision. Second edition of the two published in 1586 by the same publisher (the first edition with the word 'sauvegaerden' instead of 'sauvegarden').
Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester (1532-1588) had built an excellent relationship with Prince William of Orange in the 1570's and had generally become popular in the Netherlands, so in the aftermath of the Prince“s murder and the ensuing political chaos, Leicester was placed in command of the English campaign to help William's son and successor as Stadtholder Maurits, and the Dutch rebels after the fall of Antwerp in July 1585. In The Hague, he was urged to accept the title Governor-General by the States General of the United Provinces, thus becoming their 'absolute ruler' in matters civil and military in accordance with the resolutions of a Council of State, yet remaining himself a loyal subject of Elizabeth, making her (however indirectly) Sovereign over the Netherlands. From 1585-87 he led the English campaign in support of the Dutch Revolt, becoming himself Governor-General of the United Provinces.
