An important and rare work on cavalry
DRUMMOND DE MELFORT, Le Comte Louis Hector.Traité sur la cavalerie. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Dresden, Brothers Walther, 1786. 2 volumes. 4to. Contemporary half calf, spine gilt in compartments. With 62 folding engraved plates. [12], 168; [6], 224 pp. Important and rare military work on cavalry, here in the second edition, by Count Louis Hector Drummond de Melfort (1726-1788). The work is profusely illustrated with 62 interesting folding plates of military exercises, horse training, orders and positions for battle, movements of cavalry troops, bridging rivers, etc. The first edition was published in Paris by Guillaume Desprez in 1776 with 11 plates and an Atlas-volume with 32 double-page plates. After a German translation in 2 volumes by Heinrich Max. Fr. von Watzdorf, printed in Dresden with the title Abhandlung von der Cavalerie, this second - less expensive - French edition appeared in the same city in 1786. Drummond de Melfort was the warrant officer of the field marshal of Saxony in whose service he was during the campaigns in the years 1745-1768. He studied cavalry tactics in Prussia and referred to himself as a pupil of the famous Seylitz. Writing his Traité, Drummond was 'Maréchal du camp' and inspector of the light troops. Bindings skilfully restored, margins of some plates frayed, some with small tears, some a bit short cut. Good set of rare work on cavalry.
