Paris, London, Brussels, Rosa, (etc.), 1818. 2 vols. Contemporary half green morocco, spine gilt. With 9 lithographed views on 6 plates, hand-coloured. VI, 432; (4), 452 pp.

First edition of a comparative description of America and Europe by a settler and landowner in San Domingo. In the first volume the author primarily treats the climatological and geological conditions of the two continents. In the second volume, he describes American as well as imported animals of various regions in North and South America, compares the populations of America and Europe, and discusses customs and habits, language, religion, art, and commerce, concluding America's superiority over Europe. The nice hand-coloured lithographed views illustrate a boa in Surinam, the Niagara falls, floating gardens of Mexico, Mexico City, bridges made of rocks or of rope, and a matrimonial dance in Canada.
